I will consider myself a "grown up" when the dentist no long has power over me.
Its not just the fear of the pain. I consider that fear totally rational, because they DO hurt me, and who likes that!
Its my fear of them, what they will think of me. Why does an upcoming dentist appointment suddenly motivate me to find the time to floss 2x more than usual? Why do I care if a random stranger, who I am paying a good deal of money, thinks I am not flossing frequently enough. I take it personally, their judgement of my life, like I am not a good person because they can make my gums bleed. Why am I so concerned about getting yelled at by my dentist.
"Yes, I drink tea! No, I don't floss twice a day! I have a life....I have two kids...I don't have that kind of energy! What! You spend that much time and energy on your teeth! Maybe you have a problem."
Just saying....
On that note...I will be having my wisdom teeth extracted on Thursday. And I am terrified!

I am kinda the same way. While I don't fear them for a normal cleaning, I, too, dread the "lectures". I agree THEY have the problem!
ReplyDeleteI had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted (after putting it off more more than 10 years) one month before Livvi was born. It really wasn't that bad. They put me out completely and I think I was a little loopy leaving the office (more than usual). Other than the gauze in the remaining holes, a little pain, and the stitches coming out on their own (by design), it really wasn't that bad.
Livvi had a tooth pulled this morning and she was quite nervous as well. However, it was all over in less than one hour and she had no pain!
You can do it! You went through child birth...TWICE! You can certainly do this (and without an epidural).
If they offered an epidural for oral surjery I just might take them up on it. I honestly think I would choose natural childbirth over this. The body was designed to give birth, it is not natural to have people cutting up and pulling out teeth.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention I just don't like mouths in general. I can't even be in the room when someone else is brushing their teeth.
I have issues.
Robyn,
ReplyDeleteYou were with me immediately after mine were pulled. It couldn't be worse than hallucinating baskets and locking yourself in a bathroom with the lights off! You'll do great. And on another note, I was just waiting for you to mention my name about flossing and listerining every day because I am super-ridiculous about caring for my teeth.
Did you know I haven't been to the dentist for six years now? And I am even paying for dental insurance. I'm with ya...it's scary.
